Dell iDRAC 7 Enterprise RAC0218: The maximum number of user sessions is reached. Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller Error

Hey folks,

Anyone using iDRAC management interfaces may run into problems.  I started having issues with the web interface locking up and then could not log in with the interface returning this error after successful login:

“RAC0218: The maximum number of user sessions is reached.”

You should be able to still login to the iDRAC management host via SSH.  Then you can run the following command to reset the stupid piece of shit:

/admin1-> racadm racreset
RAC reset operation initated successfully. It may take a few
minutes for the RAC to come online again.
/admin1->

You’ll lose your SSH connection while the controller restarts.  Afterwards you should be able to login once again.

Mm.,

  1. Did you update firmware lately? LIke in the last month? In googling, it seems that a bunch of us have run into this issue on the latest firmware for the drac.

    1. Could be new firmware indeed, it’s the same problem on several new R620’s I have.

  2. Try this –

    Load the Dell Server Administrator on the box if you don’t have it already loaded

    “racadm racreset hard”

    It even fixed our Firmware problem too

  3. I’ve seen the issu that the desktop from where you unsuccess login 3 -4 times, is blacklisted during about 9 minutes
    i’ve never seen or take a look at this .; is anyone ?

  4. Not only we have “Dell iDRAC 7 Enterprise RAC0218: The maximum number of user sessions is reached”, but when trying to ssh to its management interface, and logging on as root, I obtain the message :
    “No more sessions are available for this type of connection”.
    It only shows in a short flash, and the session is immediately kicked out.

    In addition, the IDRAC logon screen is hanging when being opened from Internet Explorer (sorry for this nasty word). The IDRAC logon screen shows normally when accessed from Firefox, but returns this message. Could it be that any “hanging” Internet Explorer originated session is regarded as a still open session ? In any case we’re far from happy with it, as we will have to drive to the datacenter, and physically cycle the power of the server.
    🙁

  5. Hi,
    I have the same issue with IDERAC 7 but when i tried to login to IDERAC via ssh i have the
    message “No more sessions are available for this type of connection!”
    Anyone with a solution?

  6. If you can’t logon to the web interface and you also cannot SSH in to do a reset, you can also hold in the information button (usually has an “i” on it) for 15-20 seconds. This resets only the iDRAC and you don’t have to power cycle the server i.e. there is no interruption. I’ve had to do this on multiple occassions. After gaining access, make sure to updated to the latest firmware as soon as possible, which addresses this problem. This is particularly a iDRAC 7 issue on firmware less than 1.57.57

  7. If you are far away from your datacenter you can still use ipmi to control, e.g. power of your server. Eg using ipmitool to power on a server would be ipmitool -I lanplus -H -U root power on.
